Downhole Seismic Test

Downhole Seismic Objective

  • Objective: Measure travel times of P-waves (compression waves) and S-waves (shear waves) from the energy source to the receivers.
  • Testing Method: Conducted in a single borehole by drilling a hole to the required depth.
  • Wave Travel Direction: Vertical—either downward or upward—depending on the impulse source location.

Down-hole Test:

  • Waves propagate downward through soil layers.
  • Single wave source placed on the ground surface adjacent to the borehole.
  • Receivers are either:
    • A string of multiple fixed receivers at known depths.
    • A single receiver moved to different depths.
  • Connected to a high-speed recording system to measure wave travel time.
  • Shear wave velocity determined from the time vs. depth curve.

Up-hole Test:

  • Waves propagate upward through soil layers.
  • Movable energy source located inside the borehole.
  • Single receiver placed on the ground surface adjacent to the borehole.

Cross-hole Test:

  • Waves travel horizontally across boreholes instead of vertically.
